On the design
The instinct is toward restraint. Warm tones, good type, nothing decorative that doesn’t earn its place. There are sites out there doing this kind of thing beautifully — you can find a few on the about page.
The color palette borrows from a few places at once: the burnt orange of NASA mission patches, the teal of Vietnamese lacquerware, the grey of a hotel corridor at 3am.
